Best Emollients for Lichen Sclerosus: Community Survey

Community survey insights

When vulvar skin feels dry, irritated, or painfully fragile, finding something that brings comfort can make a huge difference in your day.

If you spend any time in a lichen sclerosus support group, one question comes up again and again:

The LichenS Support Network community has lots of great questions like "What's the best emollient?"

“What’s the best emollient?”

It’s understandable. When your vulvar skin feels dry, irritated, or painfully fragile, finding something that brings comfort can make a huge difference in your day.

So we asked our community.

About a hundred people living with vulvar lichen sclerosus shared the products they reach for most often, what they love about them, and even which products they’d warn others to avoid.

What we discovered wasn’t one magical product.

It was something much more helpful.

The Products People Mentioned Most Often

One person’s holy grail is another person’s flare trigger.

There is no one size fits all emollient. Find what works for you.

Our community mentioned dozens of different products, including:

  • Aquaphor
  • CeraVe Healing Ointment
  • Vaseline
  • Coconut oil
  • VMagic Vulva Balm
  • FemmeSense Balm
  • Emu oil
  • Castor oil
  • Calmoseptine
  • YES OB Plant Oil Lubricant

Some people relied on prescription ointments alongside a daily moisturizer. Others preferred natural oils or barrier balms. Several respondents said they rotate between multiple products depending on how their skin feels that day.

Looking to Try a New Emollient?

We created an LSSN Amazon Storefront with many of the emollients and barrier products mentioned by our community, so you don’t have to search for them one by one.

When you shop through our storefront, Amazon pays LSSN a small commission at no extra cost to you. Those commissions help us create free educational resources, support programs, and community initiatives for people living with lichen sclerosus.

That tells us something important:

Finding the right emollient is often about finding the right fit for your skin.

What We Learned About Choosing an Emollient

While favorite brands varied widely, the reasons people loved them were remarkably consistent.

The most common qualities people mentioned were:

  • It never stings or burns.
  • It creates a protective barrier that lasts.
  • It helps reduce friction.
  • It’s easy to apply.
  • It’s affordable enough to use every day.

Notice what isn’t on that list.

Nobody said they were looking for luxury skincare.

They wanted comfort.

More Important Than the Brand: What People Really Want

The survey included a question about how people’s skin feels after applying their favorite product.

The answers were incredibly revealing.

“Calm and protected.”

“Like I can finally forget about my vulva for a few hours.”

“It’s the only thing that stops the ‘paper cut’ feeling.”

Those aren’t cosmetic benefits.

They’re quality-of-life benefits.

When you live with vulvar lichen sclerosus, even a few hours of relief can change your entire day.

Just Because It Works for Someone Else Doesn’t Mean It Will Work for You

Another fascinating part of the survey asked people which products they regretted trying.

The answers were all over the map.

Products that one person couldn’t live without caused burning or irritation for someone else.

Several respondents mentioned sensitivity to products containing alcohol or preservatives. Others found creams irritated their skin while ointments worked well. A few discovered they needed to layer products or use different ones for different situations.

That’s why we encourage people to think of community recommendations as starting points—not guarantees.

What This Means for Someone Newly Diagnosed

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the recommendations online, you’re not alone.

Our survey suggests a few practical takeaways:

  • Start with gentle, fragrance-free products whenever possible.
  • Remember that thicker barrier ointments work well for many people.
  • Don’t be discouraged if the first product you try isn’t the right one.
  • Pay attention to how your skin responds rather than chasing someone else’s favorite.

Most importantly, remember that emollients are designed to support skin comfort and barrier protection. They are not a replacement for the treatment plan your healthcare provider recommends.

Thank You to Everyone Who Shared

One of the things we love most about the LSSN community is how willing people are to share what they’ve learned.

Every response in this survey came from someone hoping to make another person’s journey a little easier.

That generosity is what makes this community so valuable.

Find the emollient that works for you and your body.
